ROCKVILLE, MD – The American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) announces the launch of its new open access journal, Human Genetics and Genomic Advances (HGG Advances). The journal represents a bold new step toward open science for the human genetics and genomics community.
The fully open access journal will allow for the rapid dissemination of cutting-edge, high-impact research across the breadth of human genetics. HGG Advances will be complementary to the American Journal of Human Genetics (AJHG), matching the exceptional editorial and publishing standards of the world’s most-cited human genetics publication. HGG Advances will have a fully independent editorial team to identify the most-exciting and impactful science from authors who require or desire to publish in a fully open access journal.
“The field of human genetics is rapidly evolving and HGG Advances will serve as both a catalyst and a platform for change that feels natural for the human genetics community to embrace,” said Editor-in-Chief, Michael J. Bamshad, M.D. “HGG Advances will strengthen the Society’s position as the science publisher delivering the most-trusted, most-cited and most-read journals in the field, while also supporting an innovative, diverse, and rigorous genetics and genomics research community.”
Scientific publishing has been moving over the years toward open access. The launch of HGG Advances represents ASHG’s position at the forefront of innovation. Its mission will be to build the human genetics and genomics knowledge base, and it will be a home for a wide range of research that meets the enduring standards of ASHG for scientific rigor, validity, and reproducibility. HGG Advances may also experiment with publishing and review models that strengthen and advance research goals.
“ASHG’s publishing program continues to grow and evolve,” said Anthony Wynshaw-Boris, M.D., PhD, ASHG’s President. “The Society continues to support open science and provide more options and choices to support the work and needs of all authors and researchers — those who prefer to publish in traditional subscription journals or those who prefer or need to publish in open access journals.”
HGG Advances opens for submissions today, with a call for papers and the first papers to be published later in the year. ASHG members will receive a 20% discount on the open access fee. Along with Dr. Bamshad, Jessica Chong, PhD has been appointed Deputy Editor, leading a global and diverse editorial team.
