From the ASHG 2020 Virtual Meeting. In profound ways, human genetics and genomics is expanding its reach and impact across all facets of biomedical research. For example, the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) now only funds ~10% of human genomics research at the National Institute of Health (NIH), while ~90% comes from other NIH institutes and centers – these two percentages were reversed a mere 15 years ago. Genetics and genomics play an ever-increasing role in translational and drug discovery efforts in the biopharmaceutical industry. Thus, the human genetics/genomics community has a rapidly-growing interaction with new stakeholders and collaborators. With this diversification comes an exciting challenge:  it is vital that the united human genetics/genomics community engages our new partners to accelerate discoveries across biomedical research and translate them to patients. Our advocacy efforts must be similarly broad and include these new partners. This symposium will engage global research leaders from NIH institutes, biopharmaceutical companies, and advocacy organizations who share a passion for the application of genetics and genomics.  They will discuss what they see in—and need from—the human genetics/genomics community, and how these broader interactions can help us face current major challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, diversity/inclusion, and health disparities. The goal is to facilitate connections across the spectrum of research, translation, and advocacy, so people everywhere can realize the benefits of human genetics and genomics research.
