Patent Agents assess the patentability of new technologies, processes, and treatments, and help researchers write and obtain patents. These professionals must register with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) by passing a bar examination. Unlike patent attorneys, patent agents do not need a law degree, but also cannot represent clients in court cases. Patent agents typically work for academic institutions, industry, and patent law firms. They can also work directly for the USPTO as patent examiners.
