Statement of Need

It is important that physicians comprehend the basic science that underlies clinical medicine. The American Society of Human Genetics Annual Meeting is the premier venue for this educational opportunity. By attending the meeting presentations, physicians, genetic counselors, laboratory geneticists, and clinical geneticists will learn about the most up-to-date, cutting-edge discoveries regarding human genetics and genomics.

Target Audience

This meeting is targeted to physicians, research scientists, clinical and laboratory practitioners, and others interested in the field of human genetics. The program is varied so that participants may select from several concurrent sessions; those that fit their specialized research interests and clinical practice applications.

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by Amedco LLC and American Society of Human Genetics. Amedco LLC is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

ASHG CME Policies and Procedures

As a joint provider with Amedco LLC accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the American Society of Human Genetics plans and implements all of its educational activities in accordance with the ACCME Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education to ensure balance, independence, objectivity, and scientific rigor.

The ACCME Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education describe five standards:

1. Ensure Content is Valid.
2. Prevent Commercial Bias and Marketing in Accredited Continuing Education.
3. Identify, Mitigate, and Disclose Financial Relationships.
4. Manage Commercial Support Appropriately.
5. Manage Ancillary Activities Offered in Conjunction with Accredited Continuing Education.

These updated Standards are designed to ensure that accredited continuing education serves the needs of patients and the public, based on valid content, and is free from commercial influence.

Financial Disclosures

In accordance with the ACCME® Standards for Integrity and Independence, everyone who is in control of the content of an educational activity certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ is required to disclose all their financial relationships with ineligible companies (see definition below) within the prior 24 months. Individuals must disclose regardless of their view of the relevance of the relationship to the education and those who do not disclose are disqualified from participating in a CME activity.

Individuals with potential for influence or control of CME content include:

• Planners
• Faculty
• Others who participate, e.g., facilitators and moderators

Any relevant financial relationships related to the content of the presentations must be mitigated prior to the educational activity. Disclosure of off-label, experimental or investigational use of drugs or devices must also be made known to the audience.

Terms as Defined by the ACCME

1. Ineligible Company: Those whose primary business is producing, marketing, selling, re-selling, or distributing healthcare products used by or on patients.
2. Eligible Company: Those whose mission and function are: (1) providing clinical services directly to patients; or (2) the education of healthcare professionals; or (3) serving as fiduciary to patients, the public, or population health; and other organizations that are not otherwise ineligible.
3. Relevant Financial Relationship: Financial relationships of any dollar amount with ineligible companies are defined as relevant if the educational content is related to the business lines or products of the ineligible company.
4. Individuals with potential for influence or control of educational content: Planners and planning committee members, authors, teachers, educational activity director(s), educational partners(s), and others who participate, e.g. facilitators and moderators.

ASHG’s Procedures to Identify/Resolve Conflict

• All individuals with potential for influence or control of educational content (defined in #4 above) must complete a financial disclosure form prior to the education activity.
• All disclosure forms are independently reviewed to identify relevant financial relationships.
• Any relevant financial relationships are mitigated prior to the individual assuming their role(s) and appropriate steps are taken as needed.
• All steps taken to mitigate relevant financial relationships are documented.
• Disclosures of all individuals participating in the educational activity will be made known to all learners, as required by the ACCME, in addition to disclosure of any relevant financial relationships that have been mitigated.
• Verbal statement and inclusion of a disclosure slide (1st slide) identifying relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies or if none will be required by speakers. Additionally, speakers must inform the audience prior to the presentation of any discussion of off-label or unapproved uses of drugs or devices. See below for more details.

Disclosure Statement

Speakers and moderators presenting in sessions that offer CME and CEU credit are required to provide a slide that states any relevant financial relationships (or lack thereof), and to state these to the audience prior to the start of their presentation. All disclosures have been peer reviewed by ASHG’s ACCME joint provider Amedco LLC.

Off-Label or Unapproved Use of Drugs or Devices

In accordance with the ACCME, ASHG ensures that all content is fair, balanced and represented with this highest integrity. All recommended off-label or unapproved uses of drugs are either properly cited or the recommendation is clearly marked as the speaker’s opinion.
