The guilty verdicts in the murder trial of Derek Chauvin deliver one measure of justice in a society that far too often fails to recognize the humanity of Black Americans. As ASHG expressed last summer following George Floyd’s murder, we know the source of inequality and inequity rests not in our biology but in “core experiences and history in our larger society that have their roots in flawed, racist concepts of exaggerated differences among people.” We recognize the imperative to eliminate inequities within the genetics and genomics community and beyond. We know our community has much work to do within our own field, and ASHG continues to stay united and proactive to improve the communities we serve and the nations in which we live.
I invite you to share your thoughts with me and the Board of Directors. Please email me at president@ashg.org.

Gail Jarvik, MD, PhD
